Benefits of Almond Oil

Sucralose…..good? or bad?

Happy Monday everybody!

Soooo, we all know that Sucralose is man made, but did you know that it’s another name for Splenda?  It’s produced by chlorinating sucrose, which is plain old white table sugar.  So basically it’s just chlorinated sugar, which is a chlorocarbon, and chlorocarbons are poisonous.  Even though our bodies do a great job of detoxing most things, it can still build up over time, which can be detrimental to our health.

The government says that it is safe and 98% pure, but that leaves us with 2%.  What is in that 2%?  Well, according to an article I found ( https://www.downtoearth.org/articles/2009-03/68/sucralose-dangerous-sugar-substitute ), it contains things like lead, arsenic, methanol, and many other dangerous things.

Side effects of consumption of sucralose have been reported by many:

  • dizziness
  • migraines/headaches
  • bloating
  • rashes
  • tinnitus
  • acne
  • respiratory issues
  • joint pain/aching

and this is just SOME of the many side effects.

I try very hard to limit the consumption of processed foods, but on occasion, it does happen.  I try to be a careful and thorough label reader and buy the healthiest choice that I can.  If I can’t find one, and/or cannot make it from scratch, it generally just doesn’t get purchased.  What about eating out?  Just try to make informed healthy choices.  No croutons, oil/vinegar dressing on the side or a dressing you KNOW doesn’t have any of the dreaded and possible hidden additives, steamed veggies, nothing fried, no bread.  No sodas, no sweetened tea.  I know, I know, I can hear you from here!  Sweet tea is a staple here, but I order it unsweetened and carry my own stevia with me for sweetening.  You can  too.  I know, I’m no fun.  ha Your body will thank you for it, if you’re diligent in your choices.

I hope I have given you all something to think about.  Over the last few years I have seen soooo much in the health industry that just scares the dickens out of me.  Doctors prescribe meds for the side effects of other meds and then you start seeing even more side effects and the next thing you know you have a new disease or even worse, you’re dead.  Did THAT get your attention?  I hope it did.  Please, please, PLEASE think before you eat and/or drink anything!  Do you really need that man made chemically filled food/drink that could possibly, eventually, even kill you?  Think about it…………..TRY to start making better choices.  Baby steps will get you there.  Yes you CAN do it, if you really want to.  The next time you eat/drink something, I hope you’ll remember reading this and remember to make a healthier choice. Juice Cleanse/Detox

Happy Day after Valentine’s Day everybody!

Sorry I’ve been such an absent blogger.  I will try to be better this year!

To start off the year, I’ve decided to do a juice cleanse/detox.  I’ve written before about Detoxifying the body a couple of years ago.

Anyway, if you’ve been reading my blog since the beginning, you’ll know that I had to have major back surgery in 2014, and then I had my sacroiliac joint fused in 2015.  Between not being able to exercise properly, having all those toxins put into my body (anesthesia, medication, etc.), it has really done a number on me.  Enough so that I’ve been back on blood pressure meds for almost a year.  Well, I’ve had enough and I want off the chemical meds and get my body back on its proper journey to being the healthiest it can be.

That’s where the Juice Cleanse/Detox comes in.

There are lots of benefits of doing cleanses/detoxes, and the one I have chosen to do is also a fast from solid food.  You can do this for a day, a week, or longer.  I do NOT recommend doing more than a few days unless you are VERY familiar with fasting.  I DO recommend following directions TO…..THE…..LETTER!  Ok, now that we have THAT out of the way.  Some of the benefits of doing the one I have chosen include:

* the huge influx of healthy nutrition/vitamins from the fresh squeezed fruits and veggies.

*giving your digestive system a break, which your body will thank you for.

*doing a cleanse of this type is cellular, not just your tummy/colon.  It’s everything.

*You COULD actually lose a few pounds, which is always a plus in my book. 🙂

*Helps do away with cravings and promotes will power to say no!

There can be side effects from doing fasts/cleanses/detoxes, and can be different in everyone.  A few are:  light headed, acne, diarrhea, muscle aches and pains…..just pay attention to your body.  Make sure to always ALWAYS drink lots of water!

These are just a few of the many great reasons for giving it a shot.  I tried 2 days last week as a sample, to see if I could actually do it, and I started a 5 day today.  I had fresh juice delivered this morning, and they’ll deliver more fresh juice on Thursday.  If this week goes well, I’ll do more from time to time.

Today is the 1st day of our challenge!

Happy Thursday y’all! And Happy 1st Day of May!!!!! 😀

Well, if you read the post from yesterday you will know that I suggested that we have a challenge for the month of May. It doesn’t matter if your goal is something to do with nutrition or fitness, it just has to be something healthy that is realistic. It’s not too late to join us, so if you want to be a part of the challenge, just let me know! We’d love to have you! Having others to be accountable to can make a huge difference in reaching your goals, so what are you waiting for?

Here are the goals for those that have decided to join the challenge so far:

1. My goal is to walk at least 1/2 way to the end of the road every day that the weather permits and to drink a minimum of 32 oz. of water every day. ( For those of you that don’t know – I recently had major surgery and am grounded from exercise for the next few months.)

2. Charlotte at I Run In The Rain is going to run 20 miles or more a week. (Go Charlotte!)

3. Rob at Weight2lose2013 is planning to lose 5 lbs. by eating clean and giving up wine for the month. He is also doing a HIIT challenge with Staci at Simply Fit Inside and Out which is a great addition to his goal here! I think there is a huge chance you’re going to surpass your goal Rob!

4. Melissa at HealthyMasters has been needing some “me” time. Her goal is to walk around her neighborhood, with no phone, just music, and allow herself some time to reflect each day. She says that this will no only help her to get some exercise but also will give her some time for personal growth and meditation. Awesome goal Melissa! 😀

5. Janey at Cupid or Cats hasn’t chosen a goal yet, but is going to join us too! Welcome Janey! 😀

6. Julie at Random Musings from a Type-A Workaholic is re-committing to lifting three times per week, with a secondary goal of being able to deadlift 1.5 times her body weight by June 1. Awesome goals! 😀

7. Hey everybody, help me welcome Cynthia to our challenge! Cynthia has a blog too! Yay! Make sure you go and visit her blog at Ups and Downs, Adventures with weight loss Her goal is to lose 5 pounds this month! She is having some issues with her hip, so she’s going to work on eating clean! 😀

8. Also, please welcome Lauren who has also asked to join our challenge! She is a fellow blogger that can be found at laurenbeccax. She too has a goal of losing 5 pounds this month! Her plan is to do this by eating clean! 😀

9. Kim from Always thinking I’m fat plans to drink more water (64 oz) and wants to start taking a long walk consisting of a couple miles or so once or twice a week! Go Kim! 🙂

10. Naina from The Honest Doctor has a goal of 64 oz. of water daily! Welcome Naina! 😀

It is never too late to start becoming healthier, or more fit, so just think of a healthy goal, let me know what it is and I’ll add you to our team! Once a day, or at least once a week, drop in and let us know how you’re doing with your goals. I will write a post every week with everyone’s progress for that week. If you’re stumbling with your goal, just let us know and we’ll all be here for you! Every day is a new day, so what are you waiting for? Can you imagine how you could achieve by the end of the month? I heard this years ago, and have never forgotten it…………….IF YOU CAN SEE IT, AND YOU BELIEVE IT, THEN YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT!!!!! So, visual your goals, stay conscious of them at all times, have faith that you CAN do it, and you WILL!

Exercise/Workout Accountability

Happy Hump Day! Woot Woot! (Still love that camel commercial! 😀 )

It’s that time of year that everyone is really thinking hard about exercise/working out. It’s getting sunny and warm and we all want to be in good shape and look great by summer, right? I know I do, but I’m sort of sidelined and not allowed to do much but that’s ok, I have a plan! (I’ll tell you about it shortly) I’ve noticed that a lot of my blogging friends are exercising, watching what they eat, and talking about it in their blogs. One of the Beachbody groups I am a part of is having a challenge starting May 1st so I started thinking we should have here in the blogging world too? You wouldn’t necessarily have to blog about it every day, but maybe put a blurb at the top/bottom of your blog, whenever you blog, to let all your blog buddies know that you DID reach your goal for the day/week. We could post what our goal for the month is. It doesn’t have to be exercise, it could just be a new healthy choice you’re trying to make into a habit, like more water or a piece of fruit or a salad each day. Just be realistic so that you have a better chance of reaching your goal for the month. If you surpass it great (which is what I’m going to try to do).

My goal for May is to get back to my daily water intake pre-surgery by setting a goal of 32 oz. a day (I was drinking at least 64 oz. a day if not more, now I’m lucky to get 8 oz.), and to try and walk at least 1/2 way to the end of the road (I will try to reach the end, but I’ll be happy if I can do 1/2). I may not be able to post every day, but when I do, I’ll catch you up on if I made my goals from each day that I didn’t post. I feel like if I HAVE to tell someone that I did it, I have more of a chance of actually doing it.

My hubby and I ran errands pretty much most of yesterday and I wayyyyyy overdid it in the walking category, and I’m really hurting today and strangely enough my back is swollen, so I’m off to lay down and work on my studies (starting a final exam today – wish me luck please 🙂 ).

Miso is used in many Asian dishes. It’s a paste made from soybeans that can be used to make soup, sauces, dressings….use your imagination, I’m sure you’ll think of some other great ways to utilize it in your meals! There is also one made from chickpeas in case of soybean allergy! Make sure to research the brands carried in your area because some may contain MSG’s or other hidden dangers including GMO’s. Also, don’t forget to ALWAYS buy organic!

6 Food Labels That Don’t Mean What You Think They Do – ABC News#6

Happy Tuesday everyone!

I read an article recently about labels and it REALLY needs to be shared! I tell people all the time to READ YOUR LABELS before buying OR consuming!!!!!

Bad words on labels include: “made with”, “natural”, “lightly sweetened”, “low…..light…..reduced”, “free”, “high in fiber”. These are the bad words listed in the article, but there are so many others! One of them that isn’t in the article that I’d like to include is “no sugar added”. If you read the label, it has SOME form of sweetener that most likely is NOT healthy! One of my pups (she’s actually 11) is on medication twice a day, and the easiest way to get her to take it is with “flat” meat. Yep, we call it “flat meat”! lol I try to give my furry babies nothing but the best too, so when I saw that one of the lunch meat companies had “natural” uncured, nitrite/nitrate free lunch meats I was excited! That is, until I called them and asked what EXACTLY did “natural flavors” mean on the label. I was told that it only meant herbs and spices, that they did not use it (as many other companies do) to hide things like MSG and such. I asked if the herbs/spices were organic? Guess what? They said no. You know what that means? It means it is NOT natural! So, I no longer buy that brand. It pays to do your research people!

So, what do you think? Will you start reading your labels now? Will you try and pay better attention to what you’re putting in your body? Just by spending time reading labels and NOT buying things with bad ingredients can increase your health! Why not give it a try, it’s beneficial and could not only increase your health, you will most likely lose some weight too because you’re eating healthier! Join me in being an avid label reader! Crockpot Chicken Recipe! :o)

Happy Tuesday y’all! 😀

Yep, I said y’all!  My Texas is showin’!  ha

A friend shared a recipe on Facebook and the idea sounded awesome, but I completely changed it other than a couple of ingredients because I had another idea and totally different direction to go with it.  Hope you like it and I hope we do too!  I’ve never made it and I don’t measure, so we’ll see……

4 chicken breasts cut into small pieces

1 can organic black beans

about a cup of unsweetened almond milk

1 entire box of organic broth (I used vegetable broth)

2 small cans diced organic Muir Glen tomatoes

2 huge cans crushed organic Muir Glen tomatoes

chopped garlic to your liking

1 can diced green chilis

about a tablespoon of basil

salt to taste

about a tablespoon of parsley just because

Put all of this in the crockpot and stir, cook until done (I’m going for at least 4- 4 1/2 hours)

In about 3 hours cook up some organic brown rice or rice of your choosing

break out the cheddar cheese (we use Tillamook Sharp Cheddar) and shred

My hubby will probably want parmesan too

Tortillas of your choice (or they might even be good in wonton, seaweed or eggroll wrappers!)

Take a tortilla, put a little rice on it, put some of the chicken concoction on it, add some cheese, roll up and enjoy!

That’s how I make things in my house.  I just think of something that sounds yummy and go for it.  I hope it’s good!  We’ll probably have a salad before hand to get our veggies in too.  If you don’t use the cheese and you go for gluten free rice/tortillas I think this would work as a gluten free recipe too.

Eating out in a buffet style restaurant…..

Happy Monday everyone!

Sorry I’ve been MIA the last couple of weeks, we’ve been traveling, which makes it hard to write.  We did some geocaching along the way and it’s been fun!  We’re now getting settled for a month or so, so I should be able to write at least a few days a week again.

We went out to dinner a lot during our travels and for the most part I was able to find places that had decent salads and veggies, so I did pretty well most of the time.  On one evening though we went to a buffet style restaurant which had a bit of everything, and boy was I in a state of shock after going in there.  I don’t EVER want to go to one of those places again.  Even though they did have salad, the pickings were slim and the healthy choices were almost none.  They had a tiny little container with spinach, one tiny one with romaine, and a tiny one with spring mix, and a HUGE one with iceberg.  No veggies to add to it, like cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, and loads of bad dressing choices.  They had plenty of pre-made salads like tuna, beet, carrot with raisins etc. All bad choices of course.  THEN there were the dinner choices of fried items and other poor choices of meats.  The veggies were loads of starches (mac & cheese, potatoes made every way imaginable, etc.), and very few REAL steamed veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and what they did have was cooked horribly.  And watching what people fed their children made me want to scream.  I saw three small kids under the age of 8 eating pizza, corn and mac and cheese, then a huge bowl of ice cream for dessert!  HOLY COW!  And people wonder why they have health and weight issues.  If places would cook real foods and cook them in a healthy way and not cook all the bad stuff, then maybe, JUST maybe our country could work on getting back to better health.  It was just so sad to see what people were eating and knowing they had a choice, but chose to eat bad.  I personally ate only veggies and a salad.  And barely ate that because it didn’t taste good.  Please think about what you are eating, it’s bad for you!

Things you may not know about Subway food……..

Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!  Are you watching the Olympics?  No matter what country wins what, you have to admit that these athletes are extremely gifted in their sports.  They just amaze me!  And just making it to the Olympics is a huge feat in itself!  So, I want to congratulate each and every one of them on their amazing accomplishments and wish them all the bests of luck in winning their medals! 🙂

Ok, so, you know about the yoga mat chemical in the bread that Vani from Foodbabe.com has been successful in having it removed soon.  But did you know about all the other things lurking in what appears to be healthy choices?  For instance, many of the meats have Nitrites in them, which are a known carcinogen.  There are chemical additives in pretty much all their sandwiches.  They use refined bleached flour for making their bread.  I just don’t get it.  They COULD actually be making their sandwiches truly healthy and they aren’t!  There are preservatives, artificial colors, hidden MSG, refined sugar, and most likely contain the dreaded GMO!

I personally would be willing to pay a little more for a healthy sandwich!  Organic non-GMO veggies really don’t cost THAT much more and neither does nitrite/nitrate free healthier meats.  You CAN choose better condiments, or at least give US a choice and have some good healthy choices available.  Why is it that places other than the United States can do this and they can’t do it here.  Does our government really not care about the foods we ingest?  Really?  Come on now people, we need to take a stand!  We need to choose to be HEALTHY!  Are you with me?

Do you have eczema? Then you NEED to see this!

Happy Thursday everybody!

Really, you think silk is going to “treat” eczema? Really? Come on now. Eczema shows up on the outside, but it starts from the inside, just like every other disease…..

In my several years of studies, if I have learned anything, it’s this…..changing your diet is the BEST way to fight disease. Don’t believe me? There are many books out there that prove it, and there are people that have literally done it!

There are many books…..”Healing with Whole Foods”, but Paul Pitchford is my absolute favorite, so start with that one. “Eat to Live”, by Dr. Joel Fuhrman is my other favorite. So there are two for you to start with. 🙂

Hi everybody!

I saw two things today that might be beneficial to you in your grocery shopping. One was an article on Foodbabe.com, the other a post on Facebook by Naked Food Magazine. You already know that I buy organic and non-GMO when at all possible. Here are a couple more reasons why…….

This was something I studied when I was working on my Nutrition Consultant Certificate and Holistic Health Practitioner Certificate. I was appalled and completely stunned at some of the things I read and researched. Butter and butter substitutes was one of them. Because of our travels for my hubby’s job, I don’t always have good choices to what I buy, but I always try to make the healthiest and best choice with all I have learned. Butter is a HUGE one. I use almost no butter, so I do stock up when I find organic non-GMO brands, and it usually lasts me for months and months. Thankfully! Anyway, read this article and see for yourself yet another reason why it’s important to buy organic and non-gmo foods.
